Mediation
Tailored to your needs
Mediation
Mediation is a process where a neutral party is present to help you and your ex-partner resolve your differences. The mediator is impartial and his only goal is to facilitate a resolution. Only you and the other party can reach an agreement. The mediator is not a decision-maker. This helps you and your ex-partner maintain control over the outcome of your lives.
Mediation is a voluntary process and you can withdraw at any time. It is also confidential, so you can speak freely without worrying that what you say will be used against you later.
Mediation is often a more cost-effective and less stressful way to resolve your differences. It is also a more flexible process than going to court.
Our mediators will meet with both parties independently to screen for any power imbalance and to understand the needs and interest of each party. Following our initial intakes, our mediators will facilitate mediation sessions with the goal of coming to an agreement that is suitable for both parties. We will complete the process by drafting an agreement. Our mediators are all trained lawyers. However, they do not represent either party in the context of mediation. It is therefore always encouraged to obtain an independent legal advice prior to signing any agreement.
Orbis Legal Services is proud to offer in person mediation services in Ottawa, Prescott-Russell, and Cornwall. We also offer virtual mediation services throughout Ontario.
All our mediators are bilingual, offering mediation services in both English and French.
In mediation it is important to understand one's needs and interests. When arguing about an orange, one may need the juice while the other might only need the rind.
